New Altered Book Project
I started a new altered book and have had a lot of fun with it this week. I have done the backgrounds with acrylic paints or pretty papers that I have glued down. I then filled the pages with photos of my recent projects, cut out of things I like in magazines, original drawings and carvings and photographs. I have also had fun sewing pages together with thread, beads, buttons and ribbons to create pockets and built in structure to the book.
I just bought some pug pendants and beads on etsy created by other artists to add as 3-d objects. I will share them with you as I add new pages. I love altered books because it is a great way to journal and give a beautiful book new life.

Art Appreciation and a Life Lesson...
Everyone we met on the island was so gracious, sincere and hardworking. The crafts people were so geniune and eager to share their art and how it was created. All of the pieces we bought were hand carved or sewn by the people we bought them from. The carved pieces are solid wood and dolls are bright, colorful and fun. My favorite memory of shopping was when I asked the gentleman if he made this one and he said "oh, my cousin carved that one, but I did this one." and he handed me a carved sun with a smiling face. His face was filled with joy and pride, and of course i bought them both. The spirit behind the art is the gift I see everytime I look at them.
This is my favorite piece. It is made out of solid wood and the gentleman's son hand carved each sea creature. It is about 11 x 14 x 2" thick.
I never truly felt the true ease and joy from the words "Don't worry, be happy" and "No problem" until I visited Jamaica and its wonderful people. One day in particular brought it home for me, and I promised myself I would strive to think and behave by their example everyday...

Crochet is Cool!
I love to crochet. It is so facinating to me that you can turn a long string of yarn or thread into fabric so easily. Yarn is also one of my favorite thing is the world. The never ending sea of colors, textures and types of fiber just makes me happy.
I combine my love of crochet with my love of pugs to make all different kinds of pug art with fiber. Above is a pug tape measure I made by the pool in Jamaica. I was surprised the interest it created that day. I sold two as soon as I finished them, and below are pug finger puppets and dolls I have made over the years.
The creativity that abounds inspires me to buy lots of patterns to try new things. I recently made a baby hat, booties and knitted a hat for my friend Laura and her beautiful daughter, Shelby. She was so sweet to share pictures of them wearing the finished pieces.

Art Camp 2008
Here is the class description:
This workshop will immerse you in the world of historical bookbinding. Participants will make an Ethiopian-style binding, a structure developed as early as the 4th century. The fact that some of these books are still around is a testament to their sturdiness. After creating a miniature paste-board model with papyrus covers, you will construct a sewn-board Coptic binding. The elegant sewn structure, combined with wooden covers, opens a wide range of possibilities for both the beginner and the advanced bookbinder. Using simple hand tools, you will drill, shape, and smooth your book covers. Finishing includes sealing wooden covers with milk paint and a coating of wax and adding a leather closure. As time allows, your instructor will share various features he includes in his own bindings and sculptural books.
It is a wonderful creative experience. The camp is beautiful and the classes are fun yet intensive. The studios are open 24/7 so you can work on your art as much as you would like. Here are some of the prints I created in past years at camp. I cannot wait to see how our books turn out.

I am so excited to announce that Pug Notes is a vendor at the Pug Rescue of San Diego's annual May Pug Party!
Over 1200 people and their pugs gather to have fun and games while earning needed funds for the Pug Rescue of San Diego. The theme this year is Renaissance Pugs, so expect to see lots of Knights and Princess Pugs scampering about.

Thank you for playing!
Emmitt was so happy when I got home. It was last night at 11:30 pm and the sleepy pug would not leave my side as I unpacked and got ready for sleeeeeep. He just leaned on me until i guided him to his little bed.

We are on our way home!
Melanie and I had an unbelievable time in Jamaica this week. It just flew by and now we are in the Jamaica airport getting ready to board the plane.
I even made a few pug tape measures by the pool and people came up to buy them as fast as I finished crocheting them. It was so fun to meet so many pug lovers so far from home.
I will post the winners tomorrow as soon as Emmitt helps me pick them. You still have time to enter the contest. Just see the previous post to see how to play.
Have a great day and thanks for playing!
